Will it float or sink?
Have you ever tried to swim in the sea? Did you realize that you can float more easily in the sea than in fresh water or even in a swimming pool? This experiment will help you understand why.
For this activity you will need the following materials:
✔ 6 tablespoons of table salt
✔ 2 glasses
✔ 1 tablespoon
✔ Tap water
✔ 2 raw eggs
Process
Fill both glasses with tap water.
Add about 6 tablespoons of salt to a bowl and mix well with a spoon until the salt has completely dissolved in the water.
Place one egg in each container and see which egg floats and which sinks.
Discussion
What makes the egg float in salt water? The answer to this phenomenon lies in density, which refers to the amount of matter contained in a given space or volume. As you could see, the egg in salt water floated and the one in tap water did not. Because salt water is denser than tap water, because in addition to hydrogen and oxygen it also contains salt molecules (sodium and chlorine), the egg does not sink.
Simply put, the denser the liquid, the easier it is to float on.
