Laverne is from the French L'Aubépine or possibly from the Latin Roman goddess Laverna (goddess of thieves and tricksters, ironically). Laverne Cox (born 1972) — American actress and LGBTQ+ rights advocate; played Sophia Burset on Netflix's Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019); in 2014 became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy in an acting category (Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series).
