Meena (मीना) is the Sanskrit-Hindi word for "fish" (also the lapis-lazuli enamel) — the Pisces zodiac sign. Meena Kumari (1933-1972) — born Mahjabeen Bano — was the Hindi cinema actress called "The Tragedy Queen" of Indian cinema. *Her performance in Pakeezah (1972) — released weeks before her death from cirrhosis at 38 — is among the most iconic in Indian film history. Her Urdu poetry, written under the pen name Naaz, was published posthumously.*
Subject of Vinod Mehta's classic biography Meena Kumari: The Classic Biography (1972).
Meena does not currently appear in the US Social Security Administration's top 1,000 girls' names, so we don't publish a US rank or birth count for it. That says nothing about the name's standing elsewhere in the world — only that it sits outside the ranked US data we rely on.
In Pythagorean numerology the letters of Meena reduce to 2, The Peacemaker. This is a traditional interpretive system, not a factual claim about the name.
