Russian naming rests on a Byzantine Greek foundation laid down with Orthodox Christianity, overlaid on a Slavic stock that survives in fragments.

Most traditional Russian girls' names are Greek in origin — Ekaterina, Anastasia, Irina, Sofia, Elena, Ksenia — and arrived through the Church rather than through any contact with Greece. The pre-Christian Slavic layer survives mainly in the -slava and -mira compounds, where mir carries the double sense of peace and world discussed on the Atlas peace page.

The diminutive system is more elaborate than anything else in this library. A single name generates a long series of forms carrying different degrees of affection, familiarity and occasional irony — Ekaterina becomes Katya, Katyusha, Katenka, Katka, each with its own register. These are not nicknames in the English sense but a productive grammatical system, and using the wrong one is a social error rather than a stylistic choice.

The Soviet period produced a brief and now largely abandoned wave of ideological coinages, and this library records the ones that had any real currency without pretending they were widespread.

One structural point: Russians carry a patronymic between the given name and surname, formed from the father’s name with -ovna or -evna for daughters. It is not a middle name and cannot be chosen; it is the standard respectful form of address in professional life, which means a Russian woman is routinely called by her father’s name in a way that has no English equivalent.
