Tamil Girl Names

Tamil has the longest unbroken literary tradition of any language in India and one of the longest in the world, with material surviving from roughly two thousand years ago. That depth shows in the naming.

Tamil is Dravidian, not Indo-European, so it is not related to Sanskrit at all — a point regularly missed. It has borrowed Sanskrit vocabulary heavily over the centuries, and a great many Tamil names are Sanskrit in origin, but the language itself belongs to a different family entirely, and it has its own substantial native stock alongside the borrowings.

The Sangam literature supplies some of the oldest names. The Bhakti poets, and particularly Andal — the one woman among the twelve Alvars, and a major figure in her own right — supply another layer. Nature vocabulary is rich and specific: Nila is the moon, and the Tamil word is entirely unrelated to the Sanskrit one, which is a good illustration of the two stocks sitting side by side.

Tamil naming conventions differ from north Indian ones in structure as well. Traditional Tamil practice uses a father's name as an initial rather than an inherited surname, which means Tamil names often do not work the way a form asking for first and last name expects.
