Once upon a time there was a couple who wanted to have a baby for a long time, until finally that wish came true. Through the back window of the small house where they lived, they could see a splendid garden that was filled with the most beautiful plants and the most succulent fruits and vegetables. The garden was surrounded by a high wall, and no one dared to enter it, because it belonged to a very wicked witch.

One day, the woman looked out the window and saw a garden of fresh green spinach in the garden. So much was his desire to try them that he became seriously ill.

The man, very worried about his wife’s health, decided to take the risk of entering the witch’s garden. So at night he climbed the high wall that separated the garden, quickly dug up a handful of spinach and took it to his wife. She immediately prepared a salad, which she delighted in eating.

The spinach was so delicious, that the next day his desire became even greater. Again, the man wanted to please her and prepared to climb the wall. But as soon as he had dug up the handful of spinach, to his horror, he saw the witch standing in front of him:

“How dare you come into my garden and like a thief take my spinach?” I swear you will pay for this,” the witch said in a very threatening tone.

“I offer my apologies,” the man replied with a trembling voice, “I did this out of necessity.” My wife is pregnant and the sight of her spinach made her longing come over her, ever since then she has been very ill.

The witch’s anger subsided a little, and she said:

—If things are as you say, I will allow you to take all the spinach you want, it will save your wife’s life, but under one condition: you have to give me the child your wife is going to have. I will be his mother, with me he will be happy and he will never lack for anything.

The poor man was so terrified that he had no choice but to accept. As soon as the wife gave birth, the witch took the child away and named her Rapunzel.

Rapunzel became the most beautiful girl under the sun. When she was twelve years old, the witch locked her in a tower in the middle of a thick forest. The tower had no stairs or doors, just a small window at the top. Every time the witch wanted to climb the tower, she would stand under the window and shout:

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let your braid fall!”

The girl let her long golden braid fall out of the window and the witch climbed the tower.

Many years later, the king’s son was riding through the forest. As he approached the tower, he heard a song so beautiful it made him stop. It was Rapunzel, who was passing the time by singing with her sweet and beautiful voice. The prince wanted to reach her, and looked for a door in the tower, but found none.

So, he rode to the palace. However, the song had touched her heart so deeply that she kept returning to the forest every day to listen to it.

One day, while he was hiding behind a tree, he saw the witch approaching and heard her say:

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let your braid fall!”

Knowing how to climb the tower, the prince returned in the night and shouted:

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let your braid fall!”

Rapunzel dropped her braid thinking it was the wicked witch and the prince climbed up.

At first Rapunzel was scared, but the prince explained that he had heard her sing and that her beautiful voice had stolen his heart.

Rapunzel lost her fear and when he asked if she would take him as her husband, she happily accepted.

The two thought that the best way for Rapunzel to escape the tower would be for the prince to bring her a silk thread every day and for her to weave it into a ladder and then descend it.

But one day, while Rapunzel was weaving the ladder, the witch came to visit her and shouted:

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let your braid fall!”

When the wicked witch entered Rapunzel’s room, she saw the staircase and was very angry:

-You have betrayed me! she said furiously.

Without another word, the evil witch took a pair of scissors and cut off Rapunzel’s beautiful hair. The next day, when the Prince arrived with more silken thread, the witch tricked him by throwing the braid out the window for him to climb up. Upon entering the tower, he did not see his beloved Rapunzel but the witch.

“You will never see your Rapunzel again,” the witch said between laughter.

The prince was so desperate to find Rapunzel that, without thinking, he jumped off the tower and fell on some thorns that left him blind.

For many years, he wandered through the forest until he stumbled upon a beautiful lake. There he heard a song that he recognized instantly… it was the voice of his beloved Rapunzel! When Rapunzel saw the prince, she pounced on him crying. Her tears fell on the prince’s eyes and he was able to see again. Rapunzel and the prince got married and lived happily ever after.
