Once upon a time there was a king and a queen who lived very happily, but longed to have children. After many years of waiting, the queen gave birth to a beautiful girl and the whole kingdom joined them in their happiness. There was a great celebration and the fairies of the kingdom were invited. But the king forgot to invite one of them. Very resentful, the forgotten fairy appeared at the palace.

Soon, the time came when the fairies gave the little girl their best wishes:

“May she grow up to be the most beautiful woman in the world,” said the first fairy.

“Let him sing with the sweetest and most melodious voice,” said the second fairy.

“May you always behave with grace and elegance,” said the third fairy.

“May she be kind and patient,” said the next fairy.

Each of the fairies filled the girl with beautiful wishes until it was the turn of the fairy that the king forgot to invite:

“When the princess turns sixteen, she will prick her finger with a needle and that will be the end of her,” he said with all the resentment his heart allowed him to harbor in his words.

The king, queen and the whole kingdom were stunned, they begged the fairy to excuse them for not having invited her and retract what she had said, but the fairy refused both proposals.

There was one last fairy left to present her wish. Wanting to help the little girl, he told the king and queen:

“I cannot undo the words spoken, but I can change the course of events: the princess will not die when her finger is pricked by the needle, but she will fall into a deep sleep for a hundred years. Then a prince will come and wake her up.

Hearing this, the king and queen felt better. Thinking that there was a way to stop fate, the king forbade all the inhabitants of the kingdom to use needles.

The princess grew up to be a kind and sweet-hearted girl. When he was sixteen, he saw an old woman sewing:

-I can try? he asked.

The old woman replied:

“Of course, my little girl!

The princess took the needle and tried to thread the thread. At that precise moment he pricked his finger and fell into a deep sleep. The old woman, who was actually the resentful fairy, took her back to the palace and the king and queen put her to bed.

The kingdom that had previously accompanied them in happiness, accompanied them in misfortune; everyone fell into a deep sleep.

A hundred years passed. One day, by fate, a prince arrived at the palace. He couldn’t believe his eyes: the guards, servants, cats and even the cows were sleeping and snoring.

Approaching the princess, he thought that she was the most beautiful being in the world and planted a kiss on her cheek. Immediately, the princess woke up and along with her, the king, the queen, the guards, the servants, the cats and even the cows opened their eyes.

The prince and princess got married and lived happily ever after.
