Antiope (Ἀντιόπη) means "confronting, facing." Amazon queen, sister of Hippolyta — depending on tradition, Theseus either abducted her on his journey with Heracles to obtain Hippolyta's belt, or she fell in love with him willingly. She bore Theseus a son, Hippolytus, and died defending Athens against the invading Amazons who came to reclaim her. *Subject of Aeschylus's lost play Amazons and central figure of the Centauromachy frieze on the Parthenon's metopes. Wonder Woman's mother in DC Comics is named for her* — played by Robin Wright in the 2017 film.
Featured in Plutarch's Life of Theseus.
Antiope does not currently appear in the US Social Security Administration's top 1,000 girls' names, so we don't publish a US rank or birth count for it. That says nothing about the name's standing elsewhere in the world — only that it sits outside the ranked US data we rely on.
In Pythagorean numerology the letters of Antiope reduce to 8, The Visionary. This is a traditional interpretive system, not a factual claim about the name.
