Charlotte is the French feminine form of Charles, both deriving from the Old Germanic karl, meaning "free man" or "strong man." The name became a royal staple in eighteenth-century Europe: Queen Charlotte (1744–1818), wife of George III of Great Britain, gave her name to the capital of North Carolina, an Atlantic queen of cities and ports.
