Deirdre is the heroine of one of the great Irish legendary cycles — Deirdre of the Sorrows. Foretold to bring ruin to Ulster, she falls in love with Naoise; the king's jealousy destroys them all. The name itself may mean "sorrowful" or simply derive from her mythological figure.
Deirdre peaked in the U.S. in the 1960s. Today it is quietly used.
Deirdre reduces to four — the number of tragic beauty.
