Héloïse is the medieval French form of the Old Germanic Helewidis. Héloïse d'Argenteuil (c. 1100-1164) was the brilliant French scholar and abbess — her tragic love affair with the philosopher Peter Abelard produced one of the most famous correspondences in Western literature. Her letters demonstrate her stunning intellectual range in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.
Buried beside Abelard at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
Héloïse reduces to nine — the number of medieval scholar-abbess.
