Itzel comes from the Mayan goddess Ix Chel — pronounced "Ish-Chel," the goddess of the moon, water, weaving, and childbirth. The Spanish spelling Itzel preserves the sound. The name's meaning is sometimes given as "rainbow lady" or "dew of heaven."
Itzel is widely used across Mexico and Central America, particularly among families honoring Indigenous heritage. In the U.S. it entered the top 1000 in 1993.
Itzel reduces to four — the number of moon-tide rhythm.
