Maia has multiple parallel origins. In Greek mythology, Maia was the eldest of the seven Pleiades, mother of Hermes by Zeus — her name meaning "mother" or "midwife." In Roman religion, Maia was the goddess of spring growth — the month of May is named for her. In Māori tradition, Maia is also a girl's name meaning "brave warrior."
Maia entered the U.S. top 1000 in 2003 and has risen steadily. Today it sits in the U.S.
Maia does not currently appear in the US Social Security Administration's top 1,000 girls' names, so we don't publish a US rank or birth count for it. That says nothing about the name's standing elsewhere in the world — only that it sits outside the ranked US data we rely on.
In Pythagorean numerology the letters of Maia reduce to 6, The Nurturer. This is a traditional interpretive system, not a factual claim about the name.
