Marcellina is the diminutive of Marcella, from the Latin marcellus (little Mars-hammer). Saint Marcellina (c. 330-c. 398) was the elder sister and spiritual mentor of Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan — a Roman consecrated virgin to whom Ambrose dedicated his treatise De virginibus.
Featured in Ambrose's correspondence.
Marcellina reduces to nine — the number of Christian sister-saint.
