Rashsundari Devi (1809-1899) wrote Amar Jiban ("My Life") — the first known autobiography by a woman in the Bengali language, published in 1876 when she was 67. A Brahmin housewife who taught herself to read in secret (literacy for women was forbidden in her time), she described her unprecedented journey to the printed word in luminous prose.
Featured in modern feminist anthologies of Bengali literature.
