Sultana is from the Arabic sulṭānah (سلطانة — female sultan, queen). Razia Sultana (Razia al-Din, 1205-1240) was the first female monarch of the Delhi Sultanate — and one of the few women to rule a major medieval Islamic empire. Overthrown and killed in 1240. Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain's Sultana's Dream (1905 Bengali utopian feminist novella) is also to South Asian feminist literature.
