Princess Wencheng (文成, c. 625-680) was the Tang Dynasty princess sent in 641 CE to marry Songtsen Gampo, the founder of the Tibetan Empire — a politically transformative marriage. She is credited with helping introduce Mahayana Buddhism to Tibet by bringing a sacred image of the Buddha (the Jowo Shakyamuni statue still venerated in Lhasa's Jokhang Temple today) and Tang Chinese cultural arts.
