Yayoi (弥生) is the Japanese name for the third month of the lunar calendar — the beginning of spring. Yayoi Kusama (born 1929) is the Japanese contemporary artist whose polka-dot installations, infinity rooms, and pumpkin sculptures have made her one of the most celebrated living artists in the world. Voluntarily resident in a Tokyo psychiatric hospital since 1977, she has produced an enormous body of work from her studio across the street.
